Maria Mercedes Vasquez

Youth Involvement – Key for the Future Museum? Maria Mercedes Vasquez will bring a young voice into a discussion on European best practice, as a participant of the programme MAS in Young Hands (MiYH).

MAS – Museum aan de Stroom from Antwerp was throughout the latest EU Study on Audience development recognized as one of the good examples on placing audiences at the centre of organizations. The programme MAS in Young Hands (MiYH) is considered to be one of the museum’s first and most intensive activities that resonated beyond the organization, inspiring colleagues from museum sector and beyond.

Maria is an energetic and enthusiastic soul, originally from the Banana Republic of Ecuador, but now living in the Diamond city of Antwerp for almost twenty years. She has a BA in History and got her Master in Cultural Studies last year. There she wrote her thesis on the use of social media in museums to participate more with young people.

Since 2015, she has been actively engaged with Mas in Young Hands, in which twenty enthusiastic youngsters try to make the MAS museum a place where peers with different backgrounds feel welcome and can identify themselves with the collection. As a part- time digital content editor for CultuurNet Vlaanderen, she tips every day fun cultural or leisure activities in Flanders and Brussels. So, in turn for a good Akvavit, you can always ask her for some inspiration on what to do when in Flanders. In her spare time, Maria likes to try out new recipes - and eating them afterwards -, salsa dancing and long walks.
